This home was built to replace a 1950’s home,that had a floor plan with many features the homeowners liked. However, insulation and windows were not up to current building standards, making the home extremely energy in-efficient, and the mechanical systems were sadly outdated. This new, full time residence retains a two car garage and has enhanced secluded views of the adjacent Sudbury River. The very open plan of the main floor features a Douglas fir timber frame that creates a dramatic cathedral space.
The great room has a native stone fireplace as its central focal point. An outdoor deck extends the living areas during temperate months, so the usable living space is larger than the house itself. The kitchen has simple cherry cabinets, slate countertops, and a walk in pantry for food storage. There are separate sinks for food preparation and dish washing, both with windows taking advantage of river views.
Upstairs is a balcony leading to a special feature is an elevated space, fondly known as “the perch” by the homeowner, overlooking the great room with one hundred and eighty degree views of the river. The master bedroom suite, with calming green walls, has windows looking out to the river, and a master bath complete with a walk-in custom shower. There are two additional bedrooms and a bath in the walkout basement.
This house uses SIP wall panels and rigid foam on the roof to create a very energy efficient shell. The Steffes Corporation electric thermal storage unit takes advantage of low off-peak electric rates to heat the radiant floor and ceiling systems. There is also a sunroom on the south side of the house. The result is very low energy bills during the winter heating season.
Although the house is private and unassuming from the garage and entrance side, the river side opens up with windows in every living space. The night view shows just how open and transparent an energy efficient home can be.
