The Place To Go

A Green Mountain getaway gets a new lease on life...

Completed in 2007, the Whittemore family vacation home in the Green Mountains of Vermont is a testament of how good design and beautiful surroundings can work in harmony to provide the most enjoyable second home, and eventual retirement home, a family could ask for.

James and his wife Bonnie usually reside in Rye, New York just 20 miles from New York City. While their suburban life was bustling with big city amenities and activities, the couple was always longing for a quiet place somewhere that would be conducive to both their love of skiing and their love of family. The couple has 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 1 loveable flat coated retriever named Duke. The couple found the sanctuary they were looking for in a remote area of the Green Mountains in Vermont. So in 1987 they purchased an old A-frame home near a favorite ski resort and soon found themselves making the trip to their mountain getaway as often as they could manage.

The lot was gorgeous and the home was adequate, but over time they began to realize that life in the New England Mountains did not have to mean life without modern conveniences, so they went about planning a tear down of the outdated 1960's home and a total reconstruction of their beloved mountain retreat. When passing through town one day while visiting their getaway they saw a sign for a local builder specializing in timber frame homes. The couple had always loved the real mountain feeling of a timber frame home, so they stopped in to learn more and soon found themselves ready to get started on their new home with an authorized Timberpeg Independent Representative at their side.

Designed for entertaining family and friends, this home, with its open dining area and spacious great room complete with stone fireplace, is used as both a winter ski house and a midsummer family retreat. The first-floor master bedroom suite offers privacy. Two additional upstairs bedrooms have private bathrooms. There is also a loft suitable for family or office use. A deck across the back of the house and screened porch provide outdoor living.

To help with the project, TIMBERPEG® designer Jim Driesch was brought in. With over 30 years of experience in timber frame home design, Jim was able to help incorporate all of the Whittemore's special design requests. Some of the requests included a walkout lower level (because of their sloped site), a home between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet and they wanted some vaulted ceiling spaces. Finally, the house had to be planned and sited to take advantage of the very attractive open and sunny grounds which are a precious commodity in the mountainous area.

In addition to these desires, both James and Bonnie had some very unique requests. Bonnie wanted the dining room sized specifically to accommodate a 10 foot long trestle table that they had used for years in the original house. Anxious to satisfy, the designers at TIMBERPEG® gladly took in all the special requests and came back with a floor plan guaranteed to be a big hit with the whole family.
