TIMBERPEG® Teams Up with Upper Valley Habitat for Humanity to Build Home

Timberpeg® is currently working with Habitat for Humanity to construct a new home in Norwich, Vermont. It will be a full post and beam design. In addition to providing the design, Timberpeg® will supply the eastern white pine timber frame and supplier, Foard Panel, will provide the stress skin panels to enclose the home. Jay Tucker, Timberpeg® Independent Representative and owner of Flat Rock Coatings, will donate pre-stain for the tongue-and-groove decking in the home. Timberpeg® and Foard Panel employees will also help build the home.

At groundbreaking ceremonies on May 18, Timberpeg® president and COO Richard Neroni cited his son’s enthusiastic involvement in a previous Habitat project and the dedication of Don Derrick, executive director of Upper Valley Habitat for Humanity, for bringing the project to the company’s attention.

“It was Don Derrick’s knowledge and my son’s enthusiasm that made me realize this was something Timberpeg® could and should be involved with,” said Neroni. “However, I was not sure exactly how or what we would contribute at that time. Several of us at Timberpeg® began working with Don and Tim McCusker, designer at Habitat, to outline what we could do to help. What evolved was for the Timberpeg® design department to help design the home and also for our employees to contribute labor to construct the deck, pre-cut and erect a timber frame, and provide an insulated enclosure system. We were fortunate that the stress skin panel supplier we use, Foard Panel Company, in West Chesterfield, New Hampshire, agreed to provide not only the panels but also the labor to install. Two of their suppliers, TOLKO and Dow, also agreed to participate.

According to Neroni, the net result for the homeowners will be an Energy Star®-rated home that will be efficient and less costly to maintain.

Derrick was equally impressed by the help offered by Timberpeg®, its architect Jonathan Vincent, AIA, its employees and its suppliers. “This is an absolutely wonderful gift by Timberpeg® and Foard,” he commented. “The materials are top rate, and we were so impressed by the way the people in the organizations took hold of the project and designed a home especially for the Habitat ideal of a ‘simple, decent home.’”

“What a great example of people joining together to use their skills and resources to help each other help their neighbors,” he continued. “The leadership of Timberpeg® and of our twenty faith community sponsors is ensuring a safe, secure home for a family in need. This is just what I have come to expect from the people of the Upper Valley. What a great place to live.”

Neroni added, “Timberpeg® and our employees really look forward to working with the family on this project, not only because
the process of raising a timber frame like this is an exciting experience, but because we know that the family will be working for their goal of home ownership. And we will be working right alongside them.”

The Upper Valley Habitat InterFaith House will be built in Star Lake Village, Norwich, Vermont, on land provided by Twin Pines Housing Trust of White River Junction. Construction is slated for completion this summer.
